  • Madge Darbley-Hardcastle (Joan Sims) – Rocky Hardcastle'southward as loftier-spirited wife, seven years his junior. • A standing plot arc in seasons 3 and 4 had Lionel writing Just Ii People, a mini-serial for American television set. Seen often during these seasons was American mini-series producer Mike Barbosa (Otto Jarman).

The first, whose presence concerned Jean, was the very competent and extremely attractive Daisy (Justine Glenton for her kickoff appearance, thereafter Zoe Hilson). She was replaced past the kind-hearted only very talkative, eye-aged Gwen Flack (Vivienne Martin), whose presence irritated Lionel. (Daisy later returned to supplant Mrs. Flack.)

In the March 2011 PBS pledge bulldoze programming special Behind the Britcoms: from Script to Screen hosted by bandage members Moira Brooker and Philip Bretherton, the series creator/producer revealed that Jean Simmons had declined the first offer of the function of Jean (which was written with her in mind) due to her reluctance to uproot her life—specifically mentioning her dogs, garden, and family—in California.[ citation needed ]

Plot [edit]

Second Lieutenant Lionel Hardcastle (Geoffrey Palmer) and Middlesex Hospital nurse Jean Pargetter (Judi Dench) met in the summer of 1953 and barbarous head over heels in dear, simply then Lionel was posted to Korea. When he wrote to give her his mailing address in that location, the alphabetic character went astray. Jean assumed he had lost interest in her and stubbornly refused to enquire the regular army to locate him; he decided she must have lost involvement in him.

After his state of war service Lionel emigrated to Kenya, became a coffee planter, and married Margaret, whom he later divorced due to "mutual colorlessness". Some time later on his divorce he returned to England. Meanwhile, Jean had also married and borne ane child, Judith (Moira Brooker). Later her husband's decease, Jean opened Type for You, a secretarial agency. Her daughter Judith, 35 years erstwhile during the series, is twice divorced (from Ken, who had "sad eyes", and Edward, who was "very clever") and, during most of the series, lives with her mother and also works at the secretarial agency.

Lionel, now writing his memoir, My Life in Kenya, hires a typist through Blazon for You, unaware that Jean owns the agency. He and Jean first meet again when Lionel picks up Judith for a dinner date. Although Lionel and Jean's reunion is full of missteps and miscues, their romance gradually rekindles. In the tertiary series, Lionel moves into Jean's house in The netherlands Park, London; they marry during the fourth series.

Lionel's memoir is published by Alistair Deacon (Philip Bretherton), a go-getting entrepreneur much younger than Lionel. When pressed by Lionel, Alistair somewhen admits that he only agreed to publish the book as a favour to Lionel'southward male parent, whose loan to Alistair's father was the foundation of Alistair'south wealth; merely he works difficult for the success of the book and over time he becomes good friends with Lionel and Jean. Alistair is vain, and a ladies' human, and likes to call Lionel "Li", simply he is also expert-hearted and energetic, and proves resourceful enough to handle many situations that arise.

In the first serial Judith develops a crush on Lionel while Alistair takes a similar interest in Jean and likes to phone call her "lovely lady". Both crushes are brief; eventually Judith and Alistair fall for each other and, in the last series, ally. Other story arcs feature Lionel existence asked to write an American TV mini-series, Merely Two People, based on his early romance with Jean. The mini-serial fails after much rewriting and network interference. Jean eventually retires from Type for You and later volunteers at a charity shop.

Jean's very efficient secretary and Judith'southward all-time friend is Sandy (Jenny Funnell), who eventually moves in with the Hardcastles afterward splitting with her fellow Nick. Later Jean's retirement, Judy and Sandy get co-managers of Blazon for You. Sandy dates Harry (David Michaels, later on replaced by Daniel Ryan), a policeman and amateur rugby player, whom she marries at the cease of the series. Sandy's last name is never revealed on the show.

Other notable characters include Lionel's irrepressible begetter Rocky (Frank Middlemass), whose favourite saying is "Rock on!" and who owns a big country firm in Hampshire which he later on gives to Lionel; Rocky'southward housekeeper, Mrs. Bale (Janet Henfrey), who has an unusual interest in the Shipping Forecast and gives exact times that meals will be ready; Rocky's gardener, Lol Ferris (Tim Wylton), who says Jean is a "tender woman"; and Lionel's glamorous young secretarial assistant Daisy (Justine Glenton in one episode, Serial 3, and Zoe Hilson, Series four), who firmly repels Alistair's clumsy efforts to conversation her up every time they meet. In series 3 of the bear witness, Lionel is told by Rocky's physician that his father has less than a year to live, just this plotline was dropped and Rocky continued to appear throughout the prove's later series, including the last "Christmas Specials" in 2005.

Rocky marries Madge (Joan Sims), as much a character as Rocky is, when he is 85 and she is 78 (Rocky features in the 2005 Christmas Special, where he must be around 97 years old). They travel the globe, are country and western music fans, tool nearly in Madge'south classic Cadillac convertible (with steer horns on the grille), and hang out at the local pub, where Madge sings. In series nine, Madge is mentioned as being on an archaeological dig in Arab republic of egypt; in reality Joan Sims died earlier filming began. Too appearing many times are Penny (Moyra Fraser), the meddling, neurotic sister of Jean's late start husband, who calls Jean "poor Jean", and Penny's well-meaning but ho-hum dentist husband, Stephen (Paul Chapman), who in one case accidentally declined an OBE.[5]

Episodes [edit]

The programme ran for nine series, from 12 January 1992 to iv August 2002. Nearly every episode was thirty minutes long. The final serial episode was followed past an hr-long compilation show on eleven August 2002 and by a 2-office "Christmas Special" circulate on 26 and 30 Dec 2005. The Christmas specials were the last appearance of Frank Middlemass, who played Rocky, before his decease in 2006. In December 2020, UKTV dissever the Christmas Specials into four 30-minute episodes. They added a 'next time on' and 'last time on' segment at the start and end of each episode. The episodes aired on 'Drama' equally a series 10 and dedicating them to Palmer.[vi] [vii] Actress Joan Sims died in 2001, meaning Rocky's wife, Madge Darbley-Hardcastle, does not appear after series 7 or in the Christmas specials. (To explain her absence, the graphic symbol is said to be either decorated with the local theatre company or digging on an archaeological site in Egypt.)
